Did a couple of hours HF operation from the YL's QTH this weekend. The noise level there is terrible. 80 metres is pretty much unusable, 40 is extremely noisy. I think it would be very difficult to carry on the hobby from this location permanently!
The first short video shows me tuning the TS450 around the amateur bands
and then a few of the broadcast bands.
What a racket!
That sure is crazy noise for sure. It in a way sounds like the Plasma TV noise that I have here at times. I use the MFJ 1026 and on my YouTube channel (ve3wdm youtube) I have a video or two of what this unit can do.....I am not sure your noise is the same it sounds like it's right across the band.

Hi Mike
ReplyDeleteYes its a bad problem, not quite so bad on the higher bands (say 18mhz and above). I suspect the mast nearby which I have blogged about before may have something to do with it but am not sure. I intend to take my Sony portable receiver next time and see if I can get closer to the source of the noise.

City noise is a real pain in the ass. I always have a noise level of S9 on 80-40-30 and 20m indeed Mike seems to have a solution with the MFJ 1026. Maybe worthwhile trying. 73 Paul
ReplyDeleteHi Paul
ReplyDeleteLuckily I don't have to deal with this noise everyday. At my own QTH the noise level is pretty low, even though I live near town. So I count my blessings!
